ICOLPH Athletic Program Philosophy Statement
Here at Immaculate Conception Our Lady of Perpetual Help (ICOLPH) School, it is our belief that participation in our interscholastic athletics program is an integral part of the total educational experience for our students. We believe that participation in a sound athletic program contributes to the development of our students’ inspired minds, ethical Catholic faith traditions, and healthy bodies, supporting our school mission to challenge and enrich our students. Promoted, developed, and refined in the classroom, these ideals are lived out on the playing field and practice.
ICOLPH is committed to promoting an atmosphere where every action we undertake affirms the values of consideration, integrity, respect, and inclusion that nurture the Catholic faith traditions of the community ICOLPH seeks to create, maintain and publicly portray. The school administration, coaches and athletic director, student body and above all, the athletes, serve as representatives and ambassadors of our school both at home and away from school during athletic contests. Good public relations begin with every positive action we undertake, no matter how small, affirming our Catholic faith traditions to all we meet. It is for these reasons that we hold our athletes and parents to very high standards in the area of comportment.
We believe in the importance of striving for competitive success on the playing field, with athletics becoming an integral part of the life-long learning experience and where the student-athlete is given the opportunity to meet challenges every day. Athletic skill is, in part, learned through proper work and preparation, and if the student commits to the athletic experience, attendance at practice and for contests is expected. The athlete must be prepared when his/her opportunity presents itself.
Not all athletic contests will be a winning experience. It is important for all of us - student-athletes, coaches, parents and spectators - to accept defeat with good sportsmanship. Similarly, we will demonstrate good sportsmanship as we win gracefully. In this way, as we strive for competitive success, we do so in ways that show consideration and respect for other people, thereby affirming our Catholic faith tradition at all times.
The extra-curricular athletic program at ICOLPH is an optional program with broad-based participation where each family may make a personal decision to reject or request. Please be advised that in choosing to participate in this program, each individual and their parents will need to make the sacrifices necessary to successfully participate in this program during all seasons of play at ICOLPH. In addition, athletes and parents must be willing to make a primary commitment to the ICOLPH program and must be willing to devote the time necessary to be successful in the program.
Let us continue to achieve the high standards that have been maintained by our ICOLPH teams. As we develop skilled players who display leadership and good sportsmanship, we will continue to build community support both within and outside our school so that together we work to carry on the legacy of achievement for our school.
